Welcome back to our Firm of the Future profile series about thriving firms who are benefitting from the cloud and QuickBooks® Online Accountant (QBOA) to better serve clients and find new revenue opportunities. In this new article, we spotlight Angela Main Roberts of Main Accounting Services, LLC.
Mindy King: Tell us about your accounting practice.
Angela Main Roberts: Main Accounting is a small but rapidly growing practice. Our philosophy is that we should never tell a client that they have been hit by a bus; instead, we should tell them that a bus is coming and help them get out of the way.
We are focused on customer service and pride ourselves on being inner circle members of their team. Almost all of our clients are in the legal profession and consider us to be so much more than the person who records their transactions. We work with them on all levels of their business, including cash flow forecasting, budgeting, tax minimization, and timely and accurate reporting, so that they have the tools needed to make decisions for their business. When a client has a question, we don’t just answer – we give them a solution.
MK: How long have you been using QuickBooks Online Accountant?
AMR: A little over two years.
MK: What convinced you to make the move to QuickBooks Online Accountant?
AMR: Before I started my own business, I was a corporate controller. I started talking to other accountants about running a small accounting firm and everyone said, “Try QuickBooks.” I wanted something that could grow with me and allow me to offer my clients bookkeeping and controller services. I really liked the fact that you could keep all of your clients’ books in one place. It seemed like the best way to start my business, having one “portal” to keep everything together. I love the accounting tools that are not available in regular QuickBooks Online (QBO) subscriptions. I can’t imagine not having these tools now that I know they exist. Having a free account for my own books is a plus!
MK: What are your goals for your practice this year?
AMR: I am converting my existing clients to value pricing and have been working on my own pricing tool to make creating proposals for potential new clients easier and more streamlined. I am documenting all my accounting procedures in Google Docs and linking them into my workflow software. Now, all procedures can be viewed with a click of a button.
MK: What’s your favorite away-from-the-office place to get work done?
AMR: My office is in my home, so currently there is nowhere else to go to get away! QBO does make it very easy to work while I’m relaxing with my family (on my phone). Wait, is that a good thing?
MK: Where’s the craziest place you’ve done work for a client?
AMR: I was driving my son to a basketball tournament in another state and a client called with an urgent request. I had to pull over on the side of the highway to look up some information for her. I was grateful that I had the QBO mobile app to quickly access her account!
MK: What’s your number one timesavings tip?
AMR: I have discovered that you need to tell your clients how YOU do things. If all your clients follow your procedures for submitting documents, answering questions and receiving reports, among other things, then it really streamlines things and you don’t have to worry about changing your procedures for each individual client.
MK: When you’re not working, what’s your favorite way to spend your time?
AMR: I love spending time with my family. We have two teenagers in the house who really make life a lot of fun. We still try to do a family fun night each week where we watch a movie, play a board game or take a hike.
MK: What advice do you have for peers that are still on desktop?
AMR: I would ask why you are still on desktop? I don’t support desktop users anymore; all my clients are on QBO and it is so liberating! No need to upgrade, no need to backup and no worrying about which version is correct. QBO is the first application I open each morning and the last one I close at night. It’s my dashboard for all client matters.
