Mindy King: Tell us about your accounting and/or tax practice.
Heather Malka: My bookkeeping business is Pure Office Solutions, LLC, based in Oregon City, Ore. I started my business in 2017 after leaving my full-time job at a CPA firm, so that I could help clients better.
MK: How long have you been using QuickBooks Online?
HM: I’ve been using QuickBooks Online Accountant (QBOA) since 2015.
MK: What convinced you to make the move to QuickBooks Online Accountant?
HM: I love the accessibility that QBOA gives. I can view all my clients in one place, access them anywhere as long as I have internet or my personal hotspot, and my clients are able to see things done to their books in real time.
MK: What are your goals for your practice this year?
HM: My goals for my practice this year are to be able to add more monthly bookkeeping clients, increase my revenue and add on an employee.
MK: What’s your favorite away-from-the-office place to get work done?
HM: During the warmer times here in Oregon, I like to go down to a local park, soak up the natural Vitamin D and put my headphones on.
MK: Where’s the craziest place you’ve done work for a client?
HM: Recently, I had to do a payroll in a noisy hotel lounge, while on my vacation at Disney World.
MK: What’s your number one timesaving tip?
HM: Finding the right app to help make things more efficient. I love Receipt Bank and its ability to match directly to a transaction that is already in QuickBooks Online (QBO), so that a duplicate transaction isn’t created. When my clients upload their receipts, I usually start in Receipt Bank and publish those transactions first, prior to heading over to the bank feed.
I also love Practice Ignition for my firm. It has helped me out so much compared to where I was when I first started my firm. I’ve gone from three different things to obtain client payments and creating proposals to one that does it all for me and requires payment prior to accepting the proposal. The required payment has been a game changer after dealing with a client that wouldn’t pay me on time.
MK: When you’re not working, what’s your favorite way to spend your time?
HM: I love going to the gym and having that self-care time to myself. I also enjoy spending time with my best friends, reading, hiking and anything else outdoors.
MK: What advice do you have for peers that are still on desktop?
HM: My advice is for them to really determine if it’s still an efficient process for their business. I understand people needing it if they are a manufacturing company and having enterprise and construction industries, but QBO has evolved enough and added more features to be able to move away from desktop in other industries.
