Announcing changes to QuickBooks products and pricing + QuickBooks Online FAQs

An email was sent out to our QuickBooks® accountants on May 26, 2022, announcing upcoming product and pricing changes to QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, and QuickBooks Payroll (click on envelope icon):

Q: What QuickBooks Online prices are changing?

A: Prices for QuickBooks Online Simple Start, Essentials, Plus, and Advanced are changing as shown in the chart below.

  • Please note: There are no changes to QuickBooks Online Self-Employed pricing at this time.

Q: When will the new QuickBooks Online prices go into effect?

A: Here are the dates when the new QuickBooks Online pricing goes into effect:

  • July 1, 2022 for existing Simple Start and Essential customers who pay directly for their subscription. We will notify affected customers beginning June 1, 2022.
  • July 18, 2022 for all new subscriptions, upgrades, or downgrades.
  • Aug. 1, 2022 for existing Plus and Advanced customers who pay directly for their subscription. We will notify affected customers beginning July 1, 2022.
  • Sept. 1, 2022 for subscriptions enrolled before July 18, 2022 through the ProAdvisor® Preferred Pricing program or legacy accounts that still have wholesale discounts.
  • We will notify affected customers on a rolling basis beginning on June 1, 2022.

Q: When does the QuickBooks Online price increase go into effect for new customers added through accountants?

A: The QuickBooks Online price increase takes effect on or after July 18, 2022 for all new customers, including those added through QuickBooks Online Accountant.

Q: When does the QuickBooks Online price increase go into effect for existing customers who pay for their own subscriptions?

A: They will go into effect as follows:

  • July 1, 2022 for existing Simple Start and Essential customers who pay directly for their subscription.
  • Aug. 1, 2022 for existing Plus and Advanced customers who pay directly for their subscription.

Q: When does the QuickBooks Online price increase go into effect for subscriptions enrolled before July 18, 2022 through the ProAdvisor Preferred Pricing program?

A: The QuickBooks Online price increase goes into effect for these clients on or after Sept. 1, 2022.

Q: What if I have promotional pricing for QuickBooks Online?

A: If you currently have a promotional discount for Essentials, Plus or Advanced, your price is unaffected until the time that your promotion expires. When the promotion expires, the monthly subscription rate will be adjusted to match the price increase communication in this alert.

Q: How will this price change affect me if I am taking part in the revenue share program?

A: Revenue share is rolling out to all U.S.-based accountants and will be available to all those who are eligible this summer. Eligible accountants can pass along a 50% discount to clients for 3 months following a 30-day free trial period. Accountants will receive 30% of the billed price on base fees and 15% of employee fees for 12 months. This applies to all QuickBooks Online products (Simple Start, Essentials, Plus, Advanced) and Payroll (Core, Premium, Elite).

Payroll and contractor pricing

Q: What QuickBooks Online Payroll prices are changing?

A: The price of QuickBooks Online Payroll per employee fee is increasing from $4 to $5 for Payroll Core.

Q: Are contractor prices changing?

A: The price for QuickBooks contractor direct deposit, the monthly fee is changing from $4 per-contractor, to a total fee of $15 per month for up to 20 contractors, and $2 for each additional contractor enabled for direct deposit.

Q: When do the QuickBooks Online Core Payroll price increases go into effect?

A: The new Payroll prices are effective on or after:

  • July 1, 2022 for existing customers who pay directly for their subscription on Simple Start or Essentials.
  • July 18, 2022 for all new subscriptions, upgrades, or downgrades, including those added through QuickBooks Online Accountant.
  • Aug. 1, 2022 for existing customers who pay directly for their subscription on Plus or Advanced. We will notify affected customers beginning July 1, 2022.
  • Sept. 1, 2022 for subscriptions enrolled before March 1, 2022.

Q: When are the QuickBooks Contractor Payments enabled for direct deposit?

A: They’re enabled on the following dates:

  • Since May 9, 2022 the new billing model is now live for all new subscribers who signed up directly through QuickBooks Online.
  • On or after July 5, 2022 for existing subscriptions added through QuickBooks Online or QuickBooks Online Accountant.

Q: What about my Intuit Online Payroll clients that just migrated or are about to migrate to QuickBooks Online Payroll Core? How will they be affected by the per employee increase?

A: If your client migrated to QuickBooks Online Payroll Core prior to January 31, 2022, they will pay $5 monthly per employee fee.

If your client has migrated since February 1, 2022, their QuickBooks Online Payroll Core monthly per employee fee will remain at $4 for 6 months following their new account set-up. Afterwards, it will change to $5 monthly per employee fee.

Q: What is the Mailchimp discount for ProAdvisors?

A: We’re soon launching a 15% discount on Mailchimp exclusively for ProAdvisors. Once this ProAdvisor-only benefit becomes available, we’ll share the details.

Q: What should I know about accountant revenue sharing?

Q: What if I currently have an existing discount or promotion?

A: We will honor any special pricing through the duration of the promo. Once the promo has lapsed then the customer is eligible for a price increase.

Q: Why are you increasing prices now? What value do I get from this?

A: We understand that news about price increases is never easy to hear. Price increases are necessary to deliver the products, services and support you and your clients need today and in the future. We’ve recently released innovations, like:

In the coming months, you will also see several new and updated improvements across the QuickBooks Online platform. We continue to prioritize workflow automation to help save you time, payroll enhancements, a deeper integration between QuickBooks Online and Mailchimp and improvements to inventory management with QuickBooks Commerce.

Q: How long until the pricing changes again?

A: Price increases aren’t tied to a calendar schedule. All customers impacted by a price change are notified by email. We’ll continue to give you advance notice of any changes we make to your pricing.

Q: Doesn’t this price increase cut out the small businesses that you’re trying to help get started? How does QuickBooks plan to support these businesses?

A: We’re working to help more small businesses grow and thrive—and we’ve declared the goal that we will improve the success rate of all small businesses on our platform by ten percent over the national average by 2025. The QuickBooks platform provides tremendous value to small businesses with access to a connected, AI-driven expert platform that gives them access to capital, banking services, payroll, payments and more – all of which when combined has a direct impact on improving the success rate of small businesses around the world.

Q: What will the QuickBooks Desktop price increases be?

A: The QuickBooks Desktop pricing changes are not yet finalized. Once they are finalized, we will share them with you. Here are key details to keep in mind:

  1. QuickBooks Desktop 2023 products will be available for accountants on Sept. 6, 2022 and Sept. 20, 2022 for general release to small businesses
  2. You will receive notification in early August regarding the following expected price increases:
  • QuickBooks Desktop ProAdvisor Bundle
  • QuickBooks Desktop Enhanced Payroll per-employee cost
  • QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Mac Plus, and Premier Plus

Q: Why are you taking away Reports by Fathom?

A: As QuickBooks Online Advanced has evolved and grown the last few years, we have greatly improved our capabilities around data and insights. The additions and enhancements of Spreadsheet Sync, Custom Report Builder, and the Performance Center in QuickBooks Online Advanced has enhanced the ability of our customers to track and report on the most important data to manage and grow their business.
