As a valued part of our accounting professional community, we want to let you know about several changes coming to our QuickBooks® Desktop 2021 release. Here’s what to expect with our upcoming release, which is coming soon:

Greater emphasis on subscription options

Starting this fall, we’ll be encouraging customers to select one of our QuickBooks Desktop Plus subscription offerings. It’s the product you know and love with a subscription that unlocks additional benefits, including:

  • Unlimited customer support at no additional charge (a $299 annual value),1
  • Automatic data backup and recovery at no additional charge (a $99 annual value),2
  • Access to the latest version, with the latest features, security patches, and support for third-party operating system changes.
  • New for 2021: Automatically create and categorize receipt expense transactions using the QuickBooks Desktop Mobile App.3
  • Optional: Add-on discounted cloud-based remote access.4

New features

All QuickBooks Desktop 2021 customers can expect more automation to save time and boost productivity with features such as:

  • Improved bank feeds.5
  • Automatically send statements.
  • Customize payment receipts.
  • Create rule-based customer groups.

Changes in retail availability

Starting next month, you’ll only find our annually-renewed QuickBooks Desktop Plus subscription products on store shelves. We’ll continue to offer one-time purchase products on our website, through online retailers, or by calling our sales team.

New discounts for you and your clients

We strive to provide our best pricing to accounting professionals. Next month, you’ll see a new 25% discount on the first year for Desktop Plus subscriptions,6 and a 10% discount on one-time purchase products.7 These discounts will be available by calling our accountant sales team at 888-250-7279.

Q: Why is Intuit changing its Desktop strategy to a subscription model?

A: By shifting to a subscription model, QuickBooks Desktop customers will unlock additional value, support and service offerings. A QuickBooks Desktop Pro or Premier Plus subscription includes benefits not offered in the one-time purchase of a QuickBooks Pro and Premier license, including:

  • Unlimited customer support at no additional charge (a $299 annual value).1
  • Automatic data backup and recovery at no additional charge (a $99 annual value).2
  • Access to the latest version, with the latest features, security patches, and support for 3rd party operating system changes.

Q: What is the difference between QuickBooks Desktop Pro and QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus subscription?

The QuickBooks Desktop Pro and Premier Plus subscriptions have the same user interface as the one-time purchase products. The main differences are how you pay for the products, and the additional benefits associated with the Plus subscriptions (see above).

Q: What is the migration process like for my clients?

A: Transitioning from a Pro or Premier QuickBooks Desktop product to a QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus or Premier Plus subscription is easy. Customers can upgrade in just a matter of minutes and in as little as four clicks.

Q: How does this new strategy fit into the overall priority of Intuit products?

Q: What does this mean for the long term plans for QuickBooks Desktop?

A: We have millions of small businesses and accounting professionals who use our QuickBooks Desktop software each year. We will continue to provide these customers and partners with the software they want and prefer to use in order to manage their books. We are committed to the continued investment in our QuickBooks Desktop subscription products as we provide customers with a best-in-class, best-value Desktop offering.

Q: What happens if my client cancels their subscription? Will they still be able to use their downloaded software?

A: Customers who download QuickBooks Plus Desktop subscription products will always ‘own’ their data. If they cancel their subscription, they will no longer have access to the software, but will be able to open their company files on a machine with an active license. If their subscription expires, and is reactivated, they will be able to reopen their data files. Alternatively, accountants with an active, similar version year of QuickBooks Desktop can open their customers’ files.
