Today, we’re talking to Ingrid Edstrom of Polymath. Ingrid is one of the accounting professionals who won the #QBBetterTogether contest, along with her client, Traditions Mexico.
Shauna Maher: Welcome, Ingrid. Can you share a little bit about your accounting firm?
Ingrid Edstrom: Polymath’s vision is to make the world a better place, built on a foundation of thriving small businesses. We offer bookkeeping and profit advisory services to our small business clients, as well as educational resources to our fellow accounting professionals at industry conferences and to the greater small business community through AskABookkeeper.com.
SM: How did you start working with Traditions Mexico? How did you find each other?
IE: Traditions Mexico was referred to us by their tax accountant, with whom we share numerous great client relationships.
SM: What are the keys to having a successful working relationship with Traditions Mexico?
IE: Communication and shared passion. Together, we are working to make the world a better place. The fact that we’re getting paid for it AND having tons of fun is crazy awesome. This is how business is supposed to be.
SM: What’s one of the biggest challenges you’ve helped Traditions Mexico with?
IE: Tracking cash spending. This is a key pain point for the tour industry, as a lot of cash gets spent by team members off the beaten path in foreign currencies. Use of apps has really created better insights into where all the cash goes, which leads to better spending choices and reduces the chance for fraud or mismanagement.
SM: Do you use any apps with this client? Which ones?
IE: Expensify is the main one. They recently switched from Receipt Bank, as they needed real expense reports for each of their team members.
SM: What is your favorite part about working with Traditions Mexico?
IE: They are excited to play with us, making changes that improve the health of their business. We don’t have to drag them through it.
SM: What advice do you have for other accounting pros working with this type of small business client?
IE: Find the clients that you naturally communicate with. It’s different for everyone. Embrace YOUR community. Speak their language.
