9 tips for creating an impressive accounting resume

If you are looking for a new job or trying to get a different job in the accounting field, you will need a spot-on resume. You want your resume to stick out from the rest and leave the hiring manager with a good impression. Here are nine tips for creating an impressive accountant resume.

  1. Format – In order to get a hiring manager’s attention and have your resume be accepted by the hiring programs that many companies have now included, you want to have a crisp and clean format. A sloppy format will show the hiring manager that you do not care about working for their company. Hiring programs are programs that are used to sort resumes before a human even sees them. Sloppy formatting may cause you to have a low score on the hiring programs and your resume will be ignored. Putting your pertinent information on the top of the page, followed by your work experience, education, and skills is the best way to format your resume. There are many online sites that can show you good examples of resume formatting.
  2. Font Style – When you are writing a resume for an accounting position, you need to use a font that shows you are serious about the job you are applying for, and one that will pass inspection of the hiring program. Fonts that are too frilly or look like handwriting will not pass the hiring program. If there is no hiring program and a person sorts the resume before giving them to the hiring manager, you run the risk of your resume being discarded because of the font style. Ariel, Times New Roman, and Calibri are examples of good fonts to use for an accounting resume.
  3. Keywords – There are certain words you should pepper throughout your resume. These are called keywords. Keywords show that you know your accounting jargon. Read over the job posting and pull out any keywords the company used. Include these keywords in your resume. Hiring programs search resumes and pick out the number of keywords that are used. You do not want to use too many keywords, but you want some in your resume. Examples of accounting keywords include profit and loss, audit, cost accounting, internal controls, and budgets. There are quite a few more keywords that can be looked up online and used to round out your resume.
  4. Work Information/Experience – If you are currently working as an accountant, this section will be first on your resume. You want to list jobs that you have held in the past five years that pertain to accounting. Be sure to list where you work, how long you have been working, and make a bullet list of your responsibilities. This is a great place to include your keywords. If this is your first accounting job, you want to title this section “experience” and put it after your education section. List any internships or volunteer work that is accounting specific. You can highlight your responsibilities using bullets in this section.
  5. Education – Start with the most recent degree that you obtained and work backwards. If you went to college, you do not have to include your high school information. List the years you attended and the dates you graduated, or are going to graduate. If this is your first accounting job, this should be the first section on your resume after your introduction. You can also bullet classes that pertain to the job you are applying for if the classes pertain directly to accounting. Otherwise just listing your schools will be fine.
  6. Skills – This section is for you to highlight any skills you have acquired. Skills for resume include soft skills, foreign languages, and anything else that can show how useful you will be to the company. Soft skills include communication, time management, leadership, and organization. Skills can be included in a bullet list or written out in sentence form. Skills can also include accounting programming with which you are efficient.
  7. Summary or Introduction – Include a summary statement if this is your first accounting job. The statement will tell the hiring manager what you have accomplished and where you see yourself in the future. Make it a brief one sentence summary.
  8. Highlight – You want to be sure your technical skills stand out in this resume. Any accounting experience should be listed somewhere on the page. You want to be sure the resume sections are distinguishable and your skills are highlighted. You want your resume to look interesting but not be too busy. One page of simple structure is all that is needed to create a great resume.
  9. Proofread – The final step is the most important. Be sure to proofread your resume several times. Ask for help proofreading and take any constructive criticism under advisement. Be sure to double check your introductory material such as your phone number and email. You want to have accurate information so the hiring manager can get ahold of you.
