Firm of the Future Profile: Fogged In Bookkeeping
Welcome back to our Firm of the Future profile series about thriving firms and consultants who are benefitting from the cloud and QuickBooks® Online Accountant (QBOA) to better serve clients and find new revenue opportunities. In this new article, we spotlight Meghan Blair-Valero, president of Fogged In Bookkeeping.
Shauna Maher: Tell us about your firm.
Meghan Blair-Valero: We are a bookkeeping and business services practice. We serve families and businesses across America as well as internationally. The firm was founded 15 years ago and has grown from just a few clients to a team of seven that serves a few hundred small businesses and family offices.
SM: How long have you been using QuickBooks Online Accountant?
MBV: We made the move last November. Prior to that, we dabbled. It was a big change for us – but one that has proved fruitful.
SM: What convinced you to make the move to QuickBooks Online Accountant?
MBV: The billing automation was a major benefit. Days a month and more timely billing for our customers, combined with auto ACH/payment for clients with signed agreements, took what used to be A LOT of work and streamlined it.
SM: What are your goals for your practice this year?
MBV: We hope to continue our training program, further narrow the niches we service and help supplement grow our clients’ businesses.
SM: What’s your favorite away-from-the-office place to get work done?
MBV: Client-related work has to be done in the office, but content creation is best done on the beaches of Nantucket, in my opinion, or in the Handle Bar Café – my favorite coffee shop.
SM: Where’s the craziest place you’ve done work for a client?
MBV: Working on vacation does happen from time to time. One year, while on a trip to Maine with about 20 of my boyfriend’s relatives, an urgent client matter came up. We are a cloud-based firm so accessing the data was not an issue. However, the Wi-Fi in the house was lacking. I had to plug my computer directly into the modem in the utility room. I sat for an hour cuddled up to the water heater next to the dryer on a chair that was definitely made for a child.
SM: What’s your number one time saving tip?
SM: When you’re not working, what’s your favorite way to spend your time?
MBV: Reading is a favorite pastime of mine, as is spending any moment I can with my kids. Time flies, and I’m trying to make sure I don’t become a Cat Stevens song.
SM: What advice do you have for peers that are still on QuickBooks Desktop?
MBV: If you want to compete, you MUST get into the cloud. Desktop files can be hosted. Desktop is the right platform for some businesses. Hosting for law firms, MJ related industries and other businesses with high privacy bars might need to be in desktop – but PLEASE host it. Also, make sure you’re using desktop because it’s the best fit for the client, not just because it’s what you are comfortable with.
