Mindy King: Hi, Shari! Tell me a little bit about your background. How long have you been providing bookkeeping services, and what types of small businesses do you typically serve?
Shari Katz: I have been doing bookkeeping for over 25 years, but I started my own bookkeeping company one year ago. Most of the small businesses that I have worked with have been in the manufacturing or construction business, but I have also worked with salons, moving companies, and gyms.
MK: What do you enjoy the most about working with small businesses?
SK: You get to know the people you are working with easier, and when working in a company setting, you can wear different hats, which I find very interesting.
MK: Why did you decide to become a QuickBooks Live Bookkeeper?
SK: I decided to join QuickBooks Live after I started my own company. I thought it would give me more experience doing virtual bookkeeping, while also learning to work with different types of businesses that I’d never had the chance to work with before.
MK: What do you like most about working on the QuickBooks Live platform?
SK: I like meeting small businesses from all across the country, representing a variety of business areas. I also like working with the other QuickBooks Live bookkeepers and leads because I am able to learn new things from them.
MK: How does serving small businesses on QuickBooks Live actually work? Can you tell us a bit about the process, and the kind of work you do?
SK: In QuickBooks Live, we are assigned small businesses who book appointments with us. When we call them for the appointment, we set up what is called Smartlook, where we get to see their QuickBooks and they get to see us. We work with them on categorizing their bank feeds and teaching them how to use different aspects of QuickBooks Online. We usually begin with book cleanup and making sure their books are in good shape. Once that is complete, we move on to maintaining everything, which is monthly bank and account reconciliation and making sure that they are categorized correctly. We are also there to answer any questions they might have, and help them with any pain points that might come up.
MK: What types of small businesses have you worked with on QuickBooks Live?
SK: I have worked with a variety of businesses. Some of them are retail, house flippers, mechanics, plumbing, non-profit, restaurant, manufacturing, and contracting, to name a few.
MK: What do you love most about working with small businesses?
SK: The fact that you can really learn a lot about the business and the people who work there.
MK: What do you believe is the key to having a successful relationship that is 100 percent virtual?
SK: Being friendly and upbeat, really listening to what the other person is saying or asking, and being able to explain things. You need to have the other person trust you as much as they would if you were sitting in their office.
MK: What would you recommend other accountants or bookkeepers consider if joining the QuickBooks Live platform?
SK: It can offer you a lot of experience to learn about different types of businesses, especially when you are first starting out. It can help you decide if you want to do a niche business, or serve different kinds of businesses.
MK: What advice would you give to new accountants or bookkeepers just starting out in the industry?
SK: Try to get experience in a variety of different businesses and places to learn what you really enjoy doing. You will be happier doing your job if you are working with the types of businesses you enjoy working with.
MK: Now, some just-for-fun questions! If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is the one book you would bring with you?
SK: Anything Alex Cross, who is the main character in the mystery and thriller series written by James Patterson.
ML: If you weren’t an accounting professional, what would you be?
SK: I would be a teacher because I love working with children and teaching them new things.
MK: If your playlist got stuck on repeat, what would be the one song (or album) that you would want to listen to over and over?
SK: “Billy Joel’s Greatest Hits.”
MK: If you were allowed to watch only one movie for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?
SK: “Hamilton.” I love the music and dancing. It just came out, but I have watched it three times already.
